Architecture in the age of Artificial Intelligence

Synopsis:

Architecture in the age of Artificial Intelligence, written by Neil Leach, introduces AI for designers and explores its seismic impact on the future of architecture and design.

From ChatGPT and smart assistants to ground-breaking diffusion models for video and 3D modelling, this updated new edition (Bloomsbury, 2025) investigates the profound effects of AI technologies on architectural practice.

It explores how AI transforms every part of the process — from the inspiration and brief, to regulations and copywright, to performance-driven design — and looks beyond discussions of software and funcionality to ask more fundamental questions too: How did AI evolve? How does it work? What does it tell us about creativity? And what does it mean for the very future of the profession itself?

Neil Leach [hiperlink — Instagram: @neilleach14] is a professor of architecture from the UK. He directs the Doctor of Design program at FIU, and has also taught at the AA, Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, IaaC and SCI-Arc. He is a co-founder of DigitalFUTURES, and a former researcher for NASA developing a 3D printer for the Moon and Mars. He has published over 50 books, including most recently, Architecture in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: An Introduction to AI for Architects (2nd edition, Bloomsbury, 2025)

Lucinda Correia (moderator) [hyperlink — Instagram: @lucinda___correia] is an architect, researcher and professor at FA-ULisboa. She is the founder of efabula, a cultural co-op and studio on architectural and research practice in arts and humanities.

Open Conference:

JAN GEHL +  RICHARD SENNETT

Zhang Ye (moderation)

Human-Centered Urbanism in the 21st Century Insights from Gehl & Sennett

Synopsis:

This open conference brings together two of the most influential thinkers in contemporary urbanism. By placing Jan Gehl and Richard Sennett in dialogue, we aim to explore the central role of human experience in shaping and transforming our cities—through two distinct yet profoundly complementary lenses.

Jan Gehl, the Danish architect and urbanist, has pioneered a people-first approach to city planning, emphasizing walkability, public life, and livable urban environments. His practical work and research have led to concrete transformations in cities around the world, making them healthier, more inclusive, and more responsive to the everyday lives of their inhabitants.

In parallel, sociologist and philosopher Richard Sennett has examined the urban condition through its social, political, and ethical dimensions. His writings on the open city, cooperation, and the complexities of public life offer a critical framework for understanding how built environments shape—and are shaped by—social relationships and civic values.

This event invites a dynamic exchange between Gehl’s transformative pragmatism and Sennett’s critical depth, opening space to imagine an urban future where spatial design and social justice are inseparable. It is a unique opportunity to reflect on the role of cities in addressing the most pressing challenges of our time—from climate and inequality to community and coexistence—through the voices of two authors whose work continues to inspire architects, planners, policymakers, and citizens across the globe.

Special Screening

TO BUILD LAW

Synopsis:

2024 | 49 min
Digital film
Second film of Groundwork, a three-part series produced by the Canadian Centre for Architecture

Conceived by Francesco Garutti and Irene Chin, and directed by Joshua Frank.

According to a 2020 report by the UN Environment Programme, the construction industry accounts for at least 38 per cent of carbon emissions globally, operating with narrow methods geared toward profit. Buildings are held as assets, torn down, and redeveloped, with limited consideration of community and environmental impacts. Meanwhile, housing crises escalate. Evidently, a systemic shift in the way we build and value our built environment is urgently needed.

To Build Law follows bplus.xyz (b+) and station.plus (s+) as they establish a policy lab, HouseEurope!, to propose industry reforms and shift cultural norms. The film closely observes the b+ team during various phases of conceptualization and development of a European Citizens’ Initiative meant to incentivize renovation over demolition and new construction. Through this bottom-up legal tool, architecture becomes an open process of establishing partners, drafting legislation, filming stories, strategizing communications, coordinating campaigns, collecting votes, and building a movement.

To Build Law is the second chapter of Groundwork, a three-part film and exhibition series exploring the conceptual development and field research of contemporary architects cultivating alternative modes of engagement with new project sites.

The screening is followed by a Q&A with Giovanna Borasi, Director and Chief Curator, Canadian Centre for Architecture Director and Tiago Mota Saraiva, Ateliermob / Trabalhar com os 99%.

Exhibition Opening

Exposition 01

Light and Space in Hans Scharoun’s Work

by the Faculty of Architecture, RWTH Aachen (DE)

RWTH Aachen Curators: Prof. Dr. Ing. Christian Raabe, Hendrick Reinhold M.Sc.

Local Curators: Carsten Land, Pedro Ravara

Guided tour on 3rd July: Christian Raabe, Hendrick Reinhold

Synopsis

Hans Scharoun conceived architecture from the perspective of its inner space like few other architects, and many of his buildings possess an almost iconic significance. In 2022, was the 50th anniversary of Hans Scharoun's death, and in 2023 was celebrated his 130th birthday. This exhibition is dedicated to these two occasions.

As part of the "Research Field" format, students from the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University were dedicated themselves to Scharoun's highly complex interior compositions using the examples shown in this exhibition. During the pandemic, small groups of 2-3 students and a lecturer, documented seven buildings, explored its content, and several excursions, allowed the students to engage in intensive research on-site. The course was concluded with the construction of seven birchwood section models. For its realization, model-relevant aspects that were not apparent from the plans were documented and measured on-site in campaigns lasting several days, in addition to the existing plans.

Hour: 7:30pm – 8:30pm

Exposition 02

Files in Dialogue
by Archives - Lisbon School of Architecture, Universidade de Lisboa

Archives FA-ULisboa Curators: Joana Malheiro, Maria Resende
Archives FA-ULisboa Collaborators: Inês Oliveira, Filipe Amaro
Guided tour on 3 rd July: Joana Malheiro

Synopsis
The Exhibition Files in Dialogue presents a selection of sixteen architects whose
collections are part of the arch/ves – Archive of Architecture, Urbanism and Design of
FA.ULisboa, showcasing the typological, programmatic, and authorial richness of one
of the largest architectural archives in Portugal. Featuring figures such as Atelier
Mob, Bartolomeu Costa Cabral, Fernão Simões de Carvalho, Francisco Conceição
Silva, João António de Aguiar, João Favila de Menezes, João Paciência, João
Simões, José Veloso, Manuel Coutinho Carvalho e Raul Tojal Manuel Vicente, Miguel
Câncio Martins, Pancho Guedes, Pedro Maurício Borges and Raul Lino, the exhibition
offers a critical journey through the plurality of Portuguese architectural practices from
the 20th century to the present.
Conceiving the archive as both a historical reading device and a platform for critical
production, Files in Dialogue highlights the formal, conceptual, and contextual
diversity of the holdings, demonstrating how each archival fund is also a space of
design and disciplinary reinvention. In alignment with the curatorial principles of
arch/ves – preservation, valorisation, and accessibility – the exhibition asserts itself
as a curatorial essay on Portuguese architectural memory and on the active role of
archives in shaping a plural, living, and socially engaged architectural culture.
